Aldro T. Hibbard
American, 1886 - 1972
"Still Life, c. 1912"
Oil on Lined Canvas measures 15" x 20"
Signed lower right and inscribed to label on vesro
A wonderfully rare academic work by this renowned American artist.  "Still Life" is a very desirable work by this
greatly respected and prominent American artist of the 20th Century.  It showcases the highly polished Tarbellian
Museum School, before travelling abroad under the Paige Scholarship in 1913.

During his lifetime, Aldro Thomson Hibbard became known as the “dean” of landscape painting.  He was indeed
a great painter and teacher, and much more.  Hibbard was also a major driving force behind the success of the
art colony of Rockport Massachusetts, where he had settled.  He envisioned and orchestrated the conservation
of the town to maintain its turn of the century charm and artistic appeal.  Even today, it retains that flavor.

Hibbard’s love for painting started at an early age and formally in Boston under the tutelage of Joseph De Camp.
In 1909 he entered the Boston Museum School of Art, studying under Frank Benson, Frederick Bosely and
Edmund Tarbell.  In 1913 through a grant, he traveled to Europe and was influenced by the works of the masters
and notable painter of the time, including the emerging cubist movement.  During his European sojourn, Hibbard
painted some of his most remarkable early works.

WWI cut his travels short and Hibbard returned to America exhibiting in Boston after 1916.  At exhibition, his
work was immediately well received with good reviews.  Later in his career, Hibbard became an avid
plein air
painter and winter and autumn Vermont landscapes are the subjects generally associated with his work.  He
would even complete his largest works in the field, having mastered the technique of oil painting in the frozen
Vermont winters.

Aldro T. Hibbard is recognized as one of the most important artist of the Cape Ann School and continuing
escalating auction records make his works highly sought by collectors.

"Still Life" is in excellent conserved condition, the canvas lined to stabilize craquelure commensurate with the
age of the work. To verso, the original inscription is retained: “To ‘Mac” from Al Hibbard.” The work was
showcased in the Best of Boston in 2000.

This early example, showcasing the academic abilities of the artist, was acquired from the collection of Mr.
Thomas Davies, a prominent collector and private dealer and author of “Collecting Stories,” fascinating and
beautifully illustrated compilations of stories surrounding some of the paintings that make up Davies’s art
collection.  A copy of the book is provided with the painting, as well as John L. Cooley’s book on Aldro T.
Hibbard.  Also supplied, an extensive listings folder on the artist.
