Thieme was known as the master of light and reflection during his lifetime and his workshops were attended by
some of the most noted artists of the period.  Indeed, Thieme’s work exemplifies the most desirable attributes of
the American Impressionist movement of the time and without question “Winter Light” is a representative and
desirable example.

Born in Holland, Anthony Thieme worked as a set decorator in Paris and studied throughout Europe before the
advent of WWI.  During this time, he was exposed to the French and Dutch Impressionist masters and would
venture on painting campaigns to Holland, southern France, Switzerland and Italy.   These early works are
generally executed with fluid and palpable impasto, a near tonal palette and quasi-abstract composition.  The
Dutch scenes are poetically expressive, capturing the scenes in all their delicate nuances.

Thieme’s obvious talents are very well presented in this work.  His fluidity and the evidently confident “premier-
coup” technique, together with the artist’s innate talent to depict the interaction of light and surface in his scenes,
all help make Thieme’s work among the most desirable in today’s art market.  The continuingly escalating
auction records are proof of the artists’ importance and desirability among collectors of American Art.

Born in Rotterdam, this well traveled artist eventually became a longtime resident of the art colony of Rockport,
MA, and one of its most noted artists.   Anthony Thieme studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The
Hague, Holland, under George Hacker.  Then, with Garlobini, Guardaciona and Mancini in Italy, then finishing his
formative studies in Germany.  On this strong foundation, Thieme developed his own discernible style typified by
liberal impasto, near-singular choice of palette and outstanding interpretation of sunlight and texture.

Apart from being an extraordinary artist, Thieme was a strong proponent of the visual arts.  He held
memberships in many associations and was an active and often-successful exhibitor, winning a number of
important exhibition prizes.  His works are represented in numerous museums, private and corporate collections.

In 1999, the Rockport Art Association held a retrospective exhibition of Thieme’s works and published an
accompanying book and an article in American Art Review on the artist:  Judith A Curtis. Anthony Thieme 1888-
1954. Rockport Art Association, 1999. (80 pages).  A copy of the book is included with this work, together with a
complete listing's folder on the artist.
