Johann Berthelsen
American, 1883 - 1972
"Trinity Church from Wall Street"
Oil on Canvas Board measures 16" x 12" - Signed lower right
A particularly desirable example by Johann Bertheslen in flawless original condition. Apart from being a most sought after
Wall Street scene, all of the elements that make Bertheslen’s gesture so appealing are present: Flags, figures and yellow
cabs.

In this wonderfully atmospheric painting, Trinity Church casts its ethereal presence in the glow of the snowy day. Federal
Hall and the statue of George Washington oversee the scene with regal authority. The cradle of America as a nation
(Washington was sworn in as President at Federal Hall) and the heart of the economic powerhouse that New York City
continues to be... despite the current challenging economic times. A true gem…

Johann Berthelsen has emerged as an important name on the current art market, with works by the artist garnering a
strong following among collectors of American Art at major auctions.  New York City snow-covered cityscapes are most
desirable, as they reflect Berthelsen’s most recognizable and collectible subject matter.  The artist however also produced
some superbly executed nocturnal scenes of the City, showcasing the glistening splendor of its luminous presence.

Berthelsen – unlike others who painted the same subject – cleverly draped a poetic veil over the city in winter.  He
captured the stillness of the cold wintry air and offsets it with the energy of his brushstroke portraying the motion of the
bundled figures determinedly populating the scene.

Works by Berthelsen can be found is many important private, corporate and public collections.  The artist’s popularity
continues to grow strongly among collectors of important American art and without a doubt, paintings by this highly listed
and talented artist are well on its way to attaining and even more significant status in American Art.

Listed: 300 Years of American Art; Mallet’s; Artists’ Signatures; Who Was Who in American Art; Davenport’s; E. Benezit;
Fieldings; AskArt; Artnet.com, and many others. An extensive folder on this artist is supplied with the painting.
