A particularly desirable early example by Elie Anatole Pavil, a noted and well listed Impressionist painter. Born
in Odessa in 1873, Pavil lived and worked in Paris most of his life, but often traveled to Morocco. He eventually
settled and worked in Rabat until his death in 1948.
Pavil is often recognized for his depictions of theater and café life in the art districts of Paris, capturing the
colorful night-life of Montmartre and its personages in bold impressionistic styles true to premier-coup
technique. Later in life, Pavil concentrated in depicting everyday life in the Médina and along the shores of the
estuary and the port of Rabat, Morocco.
His most desirable works are generally small in format, wonderful intimate studies quickly executed with
assured brushstrokes, bold palette and engaging compositions.
A highly regarded painter, Pavil exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes (from 1905), the Salon des
Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne (from 1906). Works by the artist can be found at the Musée d’Orsay
and the Petit Palais Museum, in Paris.
