The Pocock Gallery is privileged to showcase a
remarkable collection of highly desirable paintings by
this much sought after and well exhibited and museum-
held French Impressionist painter. Considering the
rarity of such works by Elie Anatole Pavil, to have 19
examples at one time in one place is truly quite
extraordinary. Again, we are fortunate and elated to
have them all grace our walls.
Born in Odessa in 1873, Pavil travelled to Paris and
became well accepted among art circles of the period.
Influenced by the City of Lights, he emerged with a
recognizable post-Impressionist flair and vibrant
palette that together with his compositional style
established his identifiable gesture.
The artist is best recognized for his street scenes of Paris
and depictions of theatre and café life in the art
districts of Paris. It was in such popular venues that
Pavil would capture the colorful night-life of
Montmartre and its personages, doing so in bold
impressionistic style true to the premier-côup
technique.
His most desirable works are generally small in
format, wonderful intimate studies quickly executed
with assured brush-strokes, vibrant palette and
engaging compositions.
Although Pavil lived and worked in Paris most of his
life, he often traveled to Morocco where he eventually
settled. There, his work depicted everyday life in the
Médina and along the shores of the estuary and the
port of Rabat. Pavil died in Rabat in 1948.
A highly regarded painter during his lifetime, Pavil
exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes (from
1905), the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’
Automne (from 1906). Works by the artist can be
found at the Musée d’Orsay and the Petit Palais
Museum, in Paris.
